McKenzie Pass, or highway 242, is designated an Oregon Scenic Byway. Once you've traveled its winding path, it is easy to see why. Dense forest, meandering streams, waterfalls, serene lakes, and gigantic lava flows punctuate the scenery along the route although some you may have to take a short hike to. Open only in the summer time, McKenzie Pass is a favorite driving tour for locals and visitors alike. At the summit is the Dee Wright Observatory. Chances are you haven't seen anything like it. Built by a Civilian Conservation Corps foreman, you guessed it named Dee Wright, the Observatory is a tower built out of lava rock to enhance the spectacular views of the surrounding landscape. Not to be missed!
McKenzie Pass Highway is currently closed 9 miles west of Sisters, due to snow.
